Sometimes people have no other choice but to show bravery in the face of evil, we shouldn't allow ourselves to be distracted from the deliberate importation of evil. Many more of us need to find the courage to disassemble the political systems which have caused this.

I do not doubt that. But I celebrate an active citizenship. But being active does not restrict itself just to moments of unplanned physical bravery.

Thank you Gawain. Another excellent piece of writing which invokes reflection and examination of how ‘things’ were. I too, hope that there are many of us who can find ‘the hero’ inside us, should the occasion arise. Sadly, our society, our education and collective knowledge has diminished as time passes. My father used to say to me, “omnia vinces perseverance” - by perseverance you shall overcome all things, and I believed him, and still do!

Good men have to do evil things to evil men to preserve justice and humanity to good people.

Terrific piece (as always) Gawain, made me bristle with pride! Would I do the same, not sure! I hope I would because these heroes are an inspiration.

Excellent piece, Gawain. When these things happen, I too find myself wondering how I would react. I fear that I would not rise to the test in the way these people did. Love the reference to Postman's Park. One of my favourite places in London.

Likewise, ordinary heroism. Somebody - a great ceramicist should start it up again.

This was the last one added. Apparently in 2014 it was decided there should be no more. https://www.london-walking-tours.co.uk/postmans-park/leigh-pitt.htm

By their deeds shall we know them.......... Anthony Albanese ensures his media team are present to record him shaking the hand of al-Ahmed in hospital, but has yet to meet any of surviving victims or the families of the dead.

That I did not know.

Thank you for the article, though !

What is there to celebrate about a citizenship which occasionally requires members of the public to lay down their lives trying to protect their children from people the state favours? What does that bravery achieve when it saves the lives of people who will simply have to continue to live in such a country?

The people you mentioned give us hope that all is not lost. Given that we don't always know who may be living in our communities these days, I think it would be useful to teach kids self-defence. This could range from martial arts classes to other lessons. It would instil more confidence, and maybe even help them if they got into a confrontation.

There is a lot to commend action by normal citizens. None of us know when we may be called into action to defend our country….its easy to sit in your arm chair and say the government must do something…unfortunately that is not going to happen. Grow up ..

Would you wait for assistance to arrive when a member of your family or friend needs help. ?? Really pleased not to know you…rebellis
