I will not comply either. I will go back to a basic phone - or none at all - and get rid of my wheezing laptop without replacing it. Who do these people think they are? Even the suggestion of this dystopian "solution" is abhorrent!!

A brilliant summary Gawain. I say NO.

One way to frustrate the bureaucracy is for us all to deny ever receiving the cards. If we all do that we overwhelm them.

Reform MUST have the repeal of this as a manifesto commitment.

I agree wholeheartedly but please do not say that the English, rather than the British, stand up for individual freedom. We Scots have been a cantankerous lot for centuries, each parish electing our ministers rather than having bishops imposing them, so let's fight the ID card imposition together throughout Britain

As an unrepentant liberal I am becoming increasingly dismayed by this continued lurch to the right by Starmer and crew. Historically it had always been the authoritarians that had promoted such draconian measures, all wrapped up in the mantra of 'If you have done nothing wrong'.... I commit thought-crimes on an hourly basis and have been known to burn the odd Union Jack / US Flag / Hammer & Sickle in my time, so no, I'm not going to make the police's work any easier.

The only useful application of Digital ID is for the Thin Blue Line to escort me home when I am so drunk I can't even remember my name or address

No No No! I will not comply to this Orwellian mandate. A lot of people don't seem to see the implications of what it means. We MUST push back against this madness.

Of course the secondary question is that if it's all virtual and technological - what for those without a smartphone, Internet etc? There are many!

An anecdote...

Rewind to 2005, and UKIP's General Election Hustings for the Christchurch branch, of which I was (I think) still Chairman at the time. About 60 people, which for the time was quite a decent amount for a Hustings. Two candidates, one a Prison Governor, one a Methodist lay preacher who made it clear right from the outset he wouldn't campaign on a Sunday. All seems to be very much going the Prison Governor's way, he comes across as charming, highly articulate and with a goodly amount of issue knowledge, and seems like a shoe-in.

Then someone asks a question about the No2ID campaign. The Methodist suddenly springs to life, and he offers a passionate condemnation of both concept and potential reality. The Prison Governor says that even though it might go against the grain, he views the law and order benefits as outweighing principles of civil liberties.

Five minutes later, he withdraws his nomination after realising how utterly he has lost the room in that one moment. I genuinely don't think I'd ever been prouder of my fellow Kippers up till that moment.

And the Methodist? Well, he kept his deposit (which by no means all UKIP candidates did at that Election), and worked damned hard to achieve what he did. It was a genuine pleasure to campaign alongside him.

Just not on Sundays.

The EU and EUA last year issued a new universal ID. This has not solved the illegal immigration problem in many of the affected countries, so why does Starmer think it will work here?

No, this has nothing to do with illegals, it is the continuation of his desire to reintegrate us into the EU by stealth
